So, my children out-brave me by quite a bit. I couldn't have held this cute little snake unless my life depended on it and thank goodness, it didn't. We found this little thing while cleaning out grass from around the gardenia bush. We put him back to live with his family (as we do all living creatures we find) and he went merrily on his way, none the worse for wear.
